Custom Home Design Choices That Improve Daily Living

Written By : Edgehill

What separates a beautiful home from a truly great one? It’s not the price tag, the square footage or even the location. It’s actually those thoughtful design choices that make your daily life genuinely easier, more comfortable, and more enjoyable.  Our experience with custom home design in the South Okanagan has taught us that the best homes are the ones that support your routines, anticipate your needs, and solve problems you didn’t even know you had.

These aren’t always the flashy features that show up in listing photos. They’re the details that homeowners appreciate every single day, long after the novelty of a new home wears off.

So what are the design choices you can make that will genuinely improve how you live?

Let’s start with the kitchen.

The kitchen is often referred to as the heart of the home. And it’s where thoughtful design can make the biggest daily impact. These choices can help eliminate friction in your busiest space:

Mudroom-Adjacent Kitchen

Position your kitchen adjacent to the mudroom with direct sightlines. Groceries go straight from car to kitchen, you can monitor kids coming and going while cooking, and the daily chaos is contained but connected.

Secondary Prep Sick

A smaller sink separate from your main sink allows two people to work simultaneously without competing for space. One person preps while another rinses, and kids can wash hands without interrupting the cook.

Appliance Garage or Coffee Station

Built-in storage with integrated outlets keeps small appliances accessible but hidden. Your morning coffee routine doesn’t require setup, counters stay clear, and everything has a designated home.

Walk-In Pantry

A proper walk-in pantry with adjustable shelving and good lighting means you can see what you have, grocery shopping is easier, and bulk purchases have somewhere to go.

Strategic Outlet Placement

Outlets inside drawers for charging, along backsplashes where you prep, and pop-up outlets in islands mean no more reaching behind appliances or cluttering counters with cords and devices.

Custom Home Design for the Mudroom & Entry

The entry to your home sets the tone for everything else. A well-designed mudroom or entry solves problems before they spread into your main living spaces.

Built-In Benches with Storage

A bench at sitting height with storage underneath gives everyone a designated spot for shoes and bags. Sitting down to change shoes is comfortable for kids and seniors, and clutter has a home.

Hooks at Multiple Heights

Hooks at adult height (5 feet) and child height (3-3.5 feet) mean kids can hang their own coats and everyone has accessible storage. Independence is built into the design.

Dedicated Drop Zone with Charging

A specific spot (often a small built-in desk or shelf) where keys, phones, and wallets live (with outlets for charging) means you always know where things are. The “where did I put my…” panic is eliminated.

Functional Living Spaces

Your main living areas should support how you actually spend time, with design that enhances comfort and reduces daily frustrations.

Furniture-Planned Outlets and Switches

Outlets and switches positioned based on where furniture will actually be will mean that lamps won’t require extension cords and you can charge your devices from the couch. However, this requires thinking about furniture during design.

Built-In USB Charging Outlets

Outlets with integrated USB ports near seating areas and in bedrooms mean no more hunting for charging blocks. Devices charge at consistent, convenient locations.

Strategic Window Placement

Windows positioned to maximise natural light during times you’re actually home, while managing solar heat gain, make rooms feel brighter and more pleasant. In the South Okanagan’s sunny climate, this means light without excessive heat.

Quality Ceiling Fans

Properly sized ceiling fans in bedrooms and living areas provide summer cooling without cranking air conditioning, air circulation for comfort, and white noise for sleep (all while reducing energy costs).

Custom Home Design Features for Bathrooms

Bathrooms deserve thoughtful design too. Small choices here reduce daily conflicts and improve function.

Shower Niche at Proper Height

A recessed shelf in the shower wall at 48-54 inches from the floor gives shampoo and soap a proper home. Products are accessible without awkward reaching, and the shower looks cleaner with no bottles cluttering the floor.

Universal Design Elements

Curbless or low-threshold showers, grab bars (or blocking for future installation), comfort-height toilets, and lever handles make aging in place possible and help during temporary injuries. These features now look stylish and mainstream, not institutional

Notice the pattern?

None of these features are about impressing visitors or creating magazine-worthy photos. They’re about reducing daily friction, supporting your routines, and solving small problems that add up to big quality-of-life improvements.

These are the custom home design choices that you’ll appreciate.  Every. Single. Day.

These are the details that make a house feel like it was designed for you, not for some generic market buyer.

Designing for Your Life

At Edgehill Homes, this is what we mean by intentional design.  We’re designing for how you actually live.

That starts with conversations about your routines, your frustrations with current living spaces, and what would genuinely make your daily life better. Then we translate those needs into thoughtful design choices that work.

Some of these features are standard in our approach to custom home design. Others are customised based on your specific lifestyle. But all of them share one goal: making your home work beautifully for your real life, not some idealised version that doesn’t exist.

If you’re tired living in a home that doesn’t quite function the way you need it to, let’s talk.

Together we’ll create something that works.
